What I learned shipping my first production feature

Three months ago I merged my first feature into a codebase used by thousands of people. Here's what I wish I'd known on day one.
1. Tests are a conversation
Writing tests forced me to explain what the code should do before writing it. Reviewers read the tests first — so they're documentation as much as safety net.
test("shows empty state", () => {
render(<Inbox items={[]} />);
expect(screen.getByText("No messages")).toBeVisible();
});2. Ask early, ask specifically
"I'm stuck" gets a shrug. "I tried X and Y, and I think the issue is Z" gets an answer in five minutes.
3. Small PRs win
Small pull requests get reviewed faster and break less.
